On a longer trip, the plan is the gear

Two to seven days out is long enough that you cannot improvise your way through it. Water sources have to line up with campsites. Food has to be counted, not estimated. Fuel has to last the whole stretch, not most of it. Every one of those is a decision, and every one is easier to make correctly at a kitchen table than on day four with a headwind and half a liter left. The template exists to force those decisions into writing while they are still cheap.

Write the turnaround triggers down

The most valuable section is the one people rush: the conditions under which you turn around, hold in place or take the shorter option. Decide in advance what wind speed keeps the boat on the beach, what time of day is too late to start the next section, and what weather forecast cancels the crossing. Write it down and agree on it before you leave. Nobody negotiates well when they are tired, behind schedule and looking at a group that wants to push on, and a rule written by a rested version of yourself is much harder to argue with.

One plan, and everyone has it

Fill the roles, shared gear, medical and communications sections as a group, then make sure someone staying home has a copy along with your expected return time. That is how a shared stove does not get carried twice, how an allergy is known before it matters, and how anyone looking for you knows where to start. Print it, or save it offline where a dead signal cannot take it away from you.
